Delayed Speech Exhibit:
Ever blurt something out wishing you had time to fix it, well the funny thing is that we usually have time to adjust what we are saying as we are producing the sounds, this process is called a mouth-to-ear feedback . In this exhibit participants will experience a delayed feedback speed and watch how difficult it is to speak coherently with a 1/5th of a second wait time to hear the words spoken. The exhibit is best explored by two people sitting across from each other talking into microphones installed into a table; attempting to have a conversation through the delayed feedback loop they will hear the conversation through specially rigged headphones. This effect is created by an “analog delay line” that is installed into a table/headphones that can be adjusted by the participants through a knob on the table.
Have participants experience the awkwardly timed conversation together and watch them grasp the concept of a delayed mouth-to-ear feedback loop in this exhibit.
