Pipes of Pan demonstrates how tubes of varying length act to select and amplify sound waves of different frequencies. Ten glass tubes of different lengths filter out specific tones from the ambient noise in a room. Each pipe is resonant at a certain frequency, which is determined by its length. By listening to each pipe in turn, from longer to shorter, a strange progression of low- to high-pitched tones are audible.

Product Information

Looking at this exhibit, it gives nothing away about what it does or is. At first glance it appears to be a musical instrument, but this instrument doesn’t play sounds, it collects them. The “Pipes of Pan” exhibit is made of ten glass tubes, each a different length that filter and capture certain ambient tones and frequencies in the room.

Each pipe collects and distributes frequencies that differ from each other, by listening to each pipe in turn from longer to shorter, a strange progression of low to high pitched tones.
