Science On a Sphere is an animated globe that shows dynamic, animated images of the atmosphere, oceans, and land of Earth. Invented in 1995 by Dr. Alexander “Sandy” MacDonald, the director of the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory in Boulder, CO.   The exhibit uses four video projectors to display images on a smooth, white fiberglass sphere. Each projector is driven by a computer. The project was created to present NOAA’s global science and operations to the public in a new and exciting way.

Currently available data sets include ; nighttime lights on the Earth’s surface, temperature changes associated with rising atmospheric carbon dioxide, sea surface temperatures, shifts in the Earth’s tectonic plates, weather predictions and Mars topography.
