The types of puzzles represented here represent the mathematics of topology. If one object can be deformed into another then the two objects have the same topology.

In the topological sense, the puzzles are solved before you start. Either the two pieces are connected, in which case the puzzle is impossible to solve without breaking one of the pieces, or they’re not connected and all you have to do is separate them. The trick is that all these topologically unconnected pieces are disguised to look connected.
